Lets jump back in time about 30 years ago. I remember a small outdoors shop we would visit to purchase fishing gear. The owners were very nice, knew what the fish were biting on and would only carry lures they knew worked. They had tons of advice, local knowledge and they cared about the water quality as it directly effected the fishing. I knew this because of an anti-Acid Rain poster they had up. Some of you might remember the pristine Adirondack Park in upstate New York lost the majority of its native fish species due to acid rain which came from power plants in WV and Ohio. If it weren't for those pesky 'bleeding-heart liberals' who did the research and tracked the cause to the power plants there probably would be no fish anywhere on the eastern seaboard today. But alas, I digress...
Then came along the big box store, K-Mart. They had a fishing section and boy were the products cheap. We went there a few times but there was never a person working who knew the slightest thing about fishing in the area (or anywhere for that matter). After a couple years the lures were always a mess, strewn about the shelves in disarray and the products were all made in China. I kept my visits there to a minimum but evidently the reduction in business by the little fishing shop was too much and they closed. Before we knew it another K-Mart popped up and along side it the equivalent to it in the food world, Applebees. This trend has spread the country like a virus and now we have unsightly strip malls, uneducated sales people who don't care or know about what they sell, corporations profiting and the top brass don't care about the local water, air or anything. It's a sad state if you ask me but soon as I can I'm going to do something about it. Leave.
Where to? Imagine a place that saw the chance to let the big box stores take over but they were smart enough not to. Imagine a place where population didn't explode because the people realized that less people meant a greater overall standard of living. Imagine a country side full of farms, trees and quaint villages instead of huge roads, huge SUV's and HUGE thousand track McMansion developments. I guess they must all be rocket scientists to have figured this out. Or you could just call them French.
Read why CNN votes France the best place to live. I just hope the idiot Amuricans don't read this...

Alas, maybe the grass is just brown everywhere. While France may enjoy certain advantages over the United States surely the converse is also true. For example, France is known for is its ongoing racial problems. For example:

I would argue your idyllic country side 'full of farms, trees and quaint villages instead of huge roads, huge SUV's and HUGE thousand track McMansion developments' exists in the United States, you just have to move to an area that offers that lifestyle.
The fact of the matter is every place in the world has problems and France is no exception. I'll take big box retail over a parochial political system that still persecutes people based on their race any day.
Good perspective Anonymous. Thanks for sharing. Some quick research showed your point is a valid one. Thought we were a bit past the race thing - obviously my perspective is from living in a country and near a city where the President and Mayor are not white. Not being one to run from problems or tough solutions I should not have pinned my haven on France and stuck with the original issue, keeping my frustration on something that undeniably sucks. You can also say there are indeed box stores and strip malls in France as well. Just less of them. For now...
ReplyDeleteI deal with this every day. Keeping a small retail specialty store going is even harder these days with internet. Pick my brain for info then go on-line and buy it for $5 cheaper. Nice. Better yet buy the wrong shit online, and then bring it to me and want me to fix it free.
